Founders and Pioneer Groups of Mercy in Australasia

Across Australia and New Zealand, Mercy foundations were typically established by small missionary groups rather than individuals acting alone. While particular Sisters are remembered as leaders, the story is fundamentally one of community, courage, and shared mission.
 
Australia
Perth Foundation (1846)
Led by Ursula Frayne, the first Sisters of Mercy arrived in Australia in 1846.

Together, the founding sisters established schools and ministries in Perth, laying the foundation for Mercy life in Australia. Their model combined fee-paying education with free schooling for those in need, reflecting Catherine McAuley’s vision.
 
Brisbane Foundation (1861)
Led by Mother Vincent Whitty, a founding group of Sisters arrived from Ireland to establish the Brisbane congregation.

Parramatta Foundation (1888)
Led by Mother Mary Clare Dunphy, a group of nine Sisters arrived from Callan, Ireland to establish the Parramatta congregation.

Auckland Foundation (1850)
