Our Lady of Mercy College, Burraneer Bay
Our Lady of Mercy College, Burraneer has introduced a device free learning model for Year 7 students from 2026, strengthening foundational literacy, enhancing face‑to‑face collaboration, and supporting student wellbeing. The decision follows growing evidence of passive device use, reduced oral language development, and disengagement among early secondary learners.

As a Catholic girls’ school in the mercy tradition, the OLM is committed to practices that reflect both its values and the developmental needs of young adolescents. Year 7 is a pivotal transition point, where students benefit most from explicit teaching, rich discussion, and hands‑on learning. By limiting laptop use, the College aims to reduce distractions, promote deeper cognitive engagement, and foster more authentic connections between students and teachers.
